About Keating
Anthony Keating’s target was to design and build a world beating supercar; a car that would break the mould by delivering scintillating performance yet being easy to own with long service intervals. The goal was perfection, his benchmarks the world’s top supercars manufactured in Italy, Germany and the UK. The only outcome contemplated was to succeed. A stylish Italianate supercar with flowing lines, his design owed much to contemporary thinking, but with the excesses of Mediterranean automotive design nicely tempered by English reserve. It was a fresh design that begged a place in the world supercar league – yet demonstrated a unique Britishness.
The TKR’s ultra modern fixed head two seat GT coupe bodyshell demanded extreme creative skills to translate the CAD design into a finite form and produce the body buck. Forced to turn to professionals outside of the UK, Keating finally contracted the crucial task of translating the CAD drawings into beautiful bodywork to specialists in the Philippines. Almost a year later the buck, mould and first complete shell arrived in the UK. This was then married to a temporary rolling chassis to create a development mule. With Keating’s own power engineers deep into refinement of the American based but UK developed powertrain, the nextstep was production of the advanced composite carbon fibre chassis tub and this was contracted to a famed industry leader in Italy. The car was becoming a global project.
Anthony Keating’s automotive design credentials had been verified. But at that point the TKR was a one-off and, far from signalling the beginning of profitable production, what actually loomed was a seemingly endless programme of modification, redesign and intense development. Feedback from design clinics and clandestine displays highlighted a requirement for a second Keating car – a parallel project that subsquently became the SKR. Alongside the TKR’s carbon fibre tub (which remains an option), those developments led to a four power SKR range underpinned by a more conventional steelbased chassis option and tractable power honed to regular use in modern road conditions.
